NC Ski ResortsOur family's North Carolina Christmas Tree Farm is located in one of the most awe-inspiring regions of the country. The High Country, as it is sometimes referred to, is known as being the "Land of the Clouds" with its high rising mountain peaks and rich wilderness areas. These majestic peaks are also perfect for skiing in the wintertime, and during the cold months of November-March, the High Country region and our North Carolina Christmas Tree Farm receives a great deal of natural snowfall. The powdery snow conditions coupled with the amazing mountain ridges led to the first explosion in Southern skiing, which began in 1962 at Appalachian Ski Mountain in Blowing Rock. Since then, other Ski Resorts in NC have opened in the surrounding region; however, Boone remains the NC Ski capital and is the place that many associate with snow skiing in North Carolina. Why not make plans to visit the High Country region for a quick ski vacation and get your Fraser Fir Christmas Tree all in the same weekend? In fact, many people choose to do just that and come up Friday-Sunday to experience some of the winter fun in the High Country, relaxing on Friday, skiing on Saturday and finding their tree on Sunday, or vice versa. Several ski resorts in the area offer night skiing as well for those that might want to find their tree during the day and get in some skiing at night.Appalachian Ski Mountain was the first ski resort to open, not only in the area, but the entire state. It is a family friendly resort that is renowned for its atmosphere, easy-to-learn-on slopes, and French Swiss Ski School. Appalachian Ski Mountain offers not only skiing and snowboarding, but the resort also has amazing amenities including an ice skating rink, great ski shop, and small café.
Sugar Mountain is the largest ski resort in the state and the resort where
many try skiing and snowboarding for the first time. It offers the state's
largest vertical drop and has skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, cross country
skiing, tubing, and ice skating available for those that are daring. Located
right off of Tynecastle Highway (Hwy 184) in Banner Elk, Ski Sugar is a fun
place to spend your day.
